More Data, Less Data, Better Data
Professor Miguel Lobo
Professor of Decision Sciences

Even with the impact it has already had on many industries, the extraordinary growth of the ability to collect and process information, or “big data”, is just getting started and starting to be felt. Strategic managers need to take a step back to understand this process and the questions it raises. After the first impact from consumer data, what kind of areas will be disrupted next? Will it lead to a competitive advantage for those who first develop these capabilities, transforming yet another industry? Conversely, when can too much data and blind reliance on models lead to poor judgment, poor decisions, and worse outcomes?

Professor Sousa Lobo's research deals with sequential decision making, with a focus on applications that includes revenue management and optimal pricing, as well as market microstructure and optimal trade execution. He also works on methods for the analysis of social networks, in particular the role of affect in intra-organizational task networks. Some of Professor Sousa Lobo's work appears in leading publications such as Operations Research, Journal of Finance, Administrative Science Quarterly, and Harvard Business Review. Miguel Sousa Lobo holds MS, MA, and PhD degrees from Stanford University, USA, and completed his undergraduate work at Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal. After two years working with startup companies in Silicon Valley, and prior to joining INSEAD, he held academic appointments at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and, as visiting professor, at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business.

From Bytes to Barrels: Innovation Through Technology
Dr. Ibrahim (Abe) M. Elfadel
Professor - Microsystems Engineering, Head, Institute Center for Microsystems (iMicro), Masdar Institute

The Oil & Gas industry is on a quest to enhance exploration and production, improve refining and distribution efficiencies, and optimize supply and value chains while minimizing its footprint on our landscapes and shores and protecting our natural and man-made environments. In this quest, digital technologies are slated to play a major role that will make the difference between success and failure. Exploration, production, refining, distribution, and environment protection are expected to benefit from a wide portfolio of novel technologies in sensing, automation, communication, and data processing. All these novel technologies fall squarely within the jurisdiction of corporate Oil & Gas ICT divisions. The ICT challenge going forward is to quantify those benefits and translate them into increased profits across the business value chain. Can academia help? And if so, how? This keynote will address these questions by highlighting emerging patterns of industry-academia partnerships in the UAE aiming at addressing some of the major technical challenges facing the Oil & Gas industry today.

Dr. Ibrahim (Abe) M. Elfadel has 14 years of corporate IT experience with IBM Research and the IBM Systems and Technology Group with focus on the computer-aided design and verification of IBM’s high-end computing platforms. The Digitization of Oil and Gas
Morgan Eldred
Research Director, Gartner

The Oil & Gas industry is undergoing a digital transformation; physical assets are increasingly becoming digitized while firms adopt new business optimization practices that are enabled by real-time information and analysis. Although substantial progress is being made, efforts are moderated by a lack of focus on overall business performance improvement and insufficient authority to orchestrate changes across business and vendor silos. Performance improvements increasingly depend on new ways to manage data and integrate between (IT/OT) systems. Decisions are required in the selection of revolutionary or evolutionary technology, ensuring that firms plan for the future, yet are agile enough to solve the challenges of today. A strategy is required to navigate through this complexity and guide firms on their digital journey.

Morgan Eldred is a Gartner Research Director, focusing on the digitization of the Oil & Gas industry. Before joining Gartner, Mr. Eldred worked in IT strategy development, transformational program delivery, and the interface between IT and the business.
